Student Advisory Council and Graduate Committees
Graduate students are involved in the leadership of SOT through three committees. The two Graduate Committees consist of the Regional Chapter/Special Interest Group Graduate Committee (RC/SIG-GC) and the Specialty Section Graduate Committee (SS-GC). These two committees are composed of one student representative from each of the Regional Chapters and Special Interest Groups (RC/SIG-GC) and from the Specialty Sections (SS-GC). The Student Advisory Council (SAC) is formed by the elected officers of the two Graduate Committees. The SAC oversees and coordinates the activities of the two committees.
Each Regional Chapter, Specialty Section, and Special Interest Group maintains their own mechanism for selecting their representative and determining the length of terms, although generally they range from one to three years. A representative must be a student member of SOT or have submitted a completed application for membership. The student must plan to attend the Annual Meeting. Opportunities are also available annually for GC representatives to serve as a student representative on a national SOT Committee.
The Graduate Committees meet several times during the year via teleconference, and in-person at the SOT Annual Meeting. Officer elections are conducted on-site at the Annual Meeting. GC representatives are eligible be elected to officer positions (Chair, Chair-Elect, and Secretary) after one year of GC service or if they have served as a representative prior to January 1 of the year of the election. All terms are one year, except for the Chair-Elect position. Representatives elected to this position serve one year as Chair-Elect and the following year as GC Chair, and must relinquish their position as component group representative during their year as committee chair. These GC elected officers join to form the Student Advisory Council.
Together the SAC and GCs facilitate the scientific and professional development of graduate students through networking, scientific programs, and other SOT activities. These include the development of e-mail and other communications directed toward informing and increasing the student base, the hosting of a popular social Mixer at the Annual Meeting, the organization of mentoring activities such as Lunch with an Expert, and a myriad of other programs at both the national and component group level. The student leadership provides important direction through representation on SOT committees and alignment of their programs with SOT national strategic objectives.
Each Graduate Committee representative is strongly encouraged to attend the Annual Meeting, and is eligible for Travel Funding support. SOT provides $350 to each representative, and matching funds come from the respective SS/RC/SIG component group. Some restrictions apply—Get full details on GC Travel Funding policy. The Graduate Committee Chairs receive $700 travel funding directly from SOT National.

More Information about the Student Advisory Council, the Graduate Committees, and Representatives
The Student Advisory Committee was formed in 1999 to provide communication between SOT Council and the student members. This group originally consisted of representatives from the Regional Chapters. In 2007, reorganization established a separate committee for Specialty Section representatives, the original group was renamed, and the Student Advisory Council was formed to provide oversight and coordination.
