Protecting the Immune System of Children

Training In Basic Biomethodology For Laboratory Rats
The National Human Genome Research Institute Office of Laboratory Animal Medicine, with support from the NIH Office of Animal Care and Use and the AALAS Foundation, has developed a training CD in “Basic Biomethodology for Laboratory Rats.” The CD compliments the training CDs in “Training in Survival Rodent Surgery” and “Training in Basic Biomethodology for Laboratory Mice.” It illustrates the most common practices used in the NIH intramural research program and was developed to promote proficiency in performing common techniques in the rat. It consists of nine training modules, table of contents, list of definitions and help and reference sections.

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB)
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB) has added its first set of nanomaterial records. Nanotechnology is the study of matter on an atomic and molecular scale—structures 100 nanometers or smaller. A nanometer (nm) is one billionth of a meter.
Like other HSDB records, the nanomaterial records are peer-reviewed and contain information on toxicity, manufacturing and use, chemical and physical properties, environmental fate and exposure, and more.
There are currently seven HSDB nanomaterial records:
- Carbon nanotubes
- Fullerenes
- Silver nanoparticles
- Iron nanoparticles
- Titanium oxide nanoparticles
- Zinc oxide nanoparticles
- Cerium oxide nanoparticles
Information on hollow, spherical or ellipsoidal carbon nanostructures is found in the fullerenes record. The carbon nanotubes record contains information on tubular or lattice materials.
The fields of nanoparticles and nanostructures, as well as associated nomenclature, are continually evolving. Information and/or records will be added as data become available. The HSDB and nanomaterial records can be accessed on the TOXNET® Web site.
HSDB is a toxicology data file on the NLM Toxicology Data Network (TOXNET®). It focuses on the toxicology of potentially hazardous chemicals. It is enhanced with information on human exposure, industrial hygiene, emergency handling procedures, environmental fate, regulatory requirements, and related areas. All data are referenced and derived from a core set of books, government documents, technical reports and selected primary journal literature. HSDB is peer-reviewed by the Scientific Review Panel (SRP), a committee of experts in the major subject areas within the data bank's scope. HSDB is organized into individual chemical records, and contains over 5,000 such records.

Carcinogenic Potency Database
CPDB, the Carcinogenic Potency Database, was developed by the
Carcinogenic Potency Project at the University of California, Berkeley,
and by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. CPDB includes 6540 chronic, long-term animal cancer tests (both positive
and negative for carcinogenicity) from the general published literature
as well as from the National Cancer Institute and the National
Toxicology Program. Such tests are used in support of cancer risk

National Library of Medicine Resource Update: Dietary Supplements
The National Library of Medicine's Dietary Supplements Labels Database http://dietarysupplements.nlm.nih.gov includes information from the
labels of over 2,000 brands of dietary supplements in the marketplace,
including vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids,
and other specialty supplements. The database is designed to help both the general public and health care
providers find information about ingredients in brand-name products,
including name, form, active and inactive ingredients, amount of active
ingredient/unit, manufacturer/distributor information, suggested dose,
label claims, warnings, percentage of daily value, and further label
information.

Access, the most complete
350-year-old archive of journals for the Royal Society, includes every paper

Risks Associated with Smoking Cigarettes with Low Machine-Measured Yields of Tar and Nicotine, The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Tuesday released this 251-page monograph detailing the dangers of “low tar” cigarettes. The monograph, the thirteenth in NCI's Smoking and Tobacco Control Monograph Series, reports findings that reductions in cancer rates are due to decreases in smoking prevalence not to changes in cigarette design, which according to NCI, have done little to address public health needs in the past 50 years. NCI here reports on ways in which smokers compensate for lower levels of tar and nicotine, reasons why Federal Trade Commission (FTC) testing methods are inadequate, and marketing methods designed to give smokers a false sense of security regarding low tar and nicotine cigarettes.
